Out of all the platforms out there for creating your own website, WordPress is by far one of the most popular. The trusted platform has been around for many years and has undergone many different changes. Late last year, it undertook its biggest change yet. In 2020, WordPress unveiled a brand new Block Editor they called Gutenberg.
Similar to how page builders function, Gutenberg is a block editor. Previously, the old WordPress classic editor was very basic. Let’s go through the differences, shall we?
Block Editor
The new and aptly named addition allows you to drag-and-drop where you can add blocks to your content. It was designed to give users more flexibility towards both the design and content of their pages, which WordPress seems to be heading now. Gutenberg comes with over 15 blocks covering nearly everything you need to create visually striking and engaging web pages. It’s great for people who are more visual and don’t want to get bogged down with writing code.
Classic Editor
Gutenberg’s predecessor was a straightforward editor that resembled programs like Microsoft Word. It is now longer the default and can only be accessed through a plugin for the classic editor. Although the plugin is free, WordPress themselves said they’ll be discontinuing updates and support at some point in 2021.
Which is better?
In terms of performance and ease of use, Gutenberg runs really smoothly and aids your workflow. Editing blocks is elementary. All you do is click a block and toggle the block settings on the right sidebar. The classic editor doesn’t really feature blocks that can help you add design elements to your content. The formatting options are quite basic, and it has been known to lag quite a bit.
The visual drag-and-drop builder interface is a really nice touch. WordPress has made it so that everyone can use it, and it’s very easily learnt. Even those who have used the classic editor for years won’t take long to get acquainted.
Whatever you intend to do with your page, we’d recommend using Block as it's simpler and, most importantly, faster.
