Market Share and Statistics of Technologies Powering Websites

Websites must-have technologies that drive them to perform. While the domain and web hosting services are one area that is crucial for the website to be seen, other areas are just as important. For developers and IT professionals, knowing where the market is heading is vital for understanding how to cater to clientele. It also serves as an indicator for the type of websites and technologies needed in the future. Read on if you are curious about the market share and statistics of technologies powering websites this year.

Website languages

Before you can have a website, you must have a language for the programming. This language allows the functions and the visuals to appear on the screen properly. This year, the data shows that PHP leads with 78.1% of all sites using the language. After that ASP.Net has 8.1%, Ruby has 5.9%, Java 3.8%, Scalo 2.2%, JavaScript 1.7%, and Python 1.4%.

From these numbers, we can see that the market shares of JavaScript and python are dwindling. The programming language for these websites was popular in the 90s on the top-rated web hosting platforms. The script is becoming obsolete. Most programmers believe that JavaScript and Python are obsolete web languages.

Servers for websites

Servers that are not considered client-side can be broken down into a group of about six main competitors. Sure, there are other servers on the market. However, the best domain and web hosting services will use one of the top six. It is essential to know where these servers rank among the total number of websites on the internet.

Nginx has 33% of all sites, Apache 31.6%, Cloudflare 21.3%, Lite Speed 11.8%, Microsoft IIS 6.3%, and Google 1.2%. While Google has low numbers, it is essential to note that it does not have low usage. Google Cloud, which is used by many of the best-shared hostings for WordPress providers, runs off of Nginx. So the numbers can be a bit misleading. Additionally, Nginx tends to be coupled with other more significant names such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Shopify. Therefore, it isn't easy to estimate the exact market share of each server.

Web Hosting

Without top-rated web hosting, there would be no websites on the internet. You have to have a hosting provider to have anything seen. And while new providers are entering the market every day, some top contenders still pave the way for website technology, hosting protocol, and domain name registration services.

This year, the top web hosting providers were Amazon with 6.3%, Newfold Group 4.9%, Shopify 2.1%, Wix 1.9%, and Microsoft with 1.1%. While these numbers may seem low, consider that this percentile is from the entirety of the 200+ million sites on the internet. If we do this, we will see that eCommerce sites rise. Web technology will lean more to such sites in the future, allowing for more straightforward eCommerce hosting.

SSL Market Shares

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. The computer protocol ensures the safety of a website's data. As such, it is a critical part of web technology. It is so much a factor that if you do not have an SSL certificate for your site, it will be deemed potentially malicious by several platforms, including Google, MSN, and Bing. Therefore, it is critical to know which SSL providers are leading the way to choose an SSL service that is failing in its market.

Indeed Trust accounts for 36.8% of all website SSL, with a market share of 42%. Digicert Group has 16.9% with a market share of 19.3%, and GoDaddy has 5.6% with a market share of 6.4%. The market shares were up from the former year in all SSL groups listed. This confirms that the number of live sites has increased. Additionally, this shows that more sites conform to the new set standards of SERP algorithms which dictate that sites must have the SSL protocol to rank higher up on the SERPs.

Proxy Services

Proxy Servers are perhaps one of the essential parts of web technologies—the Proxy Services work as the intermediary between computers. When data is requested from one computer, the proxy service analyzes that information and sends it to the necessary computer service. That information is processed through the server and sent back to the requesting computer. In this way, there is no direct computer to computer data transfers. Why is this important? It vastly reduces the risk of security breaches. It also minimizes overloads to a specific computer system.

The leading proxy service is Cloudflare, with 19.1% of all sites and a market share of 80.5%. Fastly is the second largest with 1.5% and a market share of 6.2%. Amazon trails with a 1.3% and a market share of 5.4%.
