If you’re new to blogging, you may have heard people ask what you’re doing to improve your SEO. If you don’t know where to start, never fear! We are here to discuss what SEO is, why it’s important and offer you some great tips.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and it pretty much is what it says on the tin! It’s all about optimizing your website in a way that allows you to rank higher in search results. For example, most people focus on Google search results.

Why is this important?

Search traffic makes up a huge percentage of traffic for most sites, especially new ones. Many focus on social media traffic, like Instagram or Twitter, but search traffic has a higher conversion rate. It is likely readers will find your blog through a specific Google search, which is great! This gives your page more credibility that you can’t always get from social media. SEO is an investment in your blog. With that in mind, here are our top tips:

Always research keywords - whenever you decide on writing a new blog, make sure you do keyword research. The idea is to find what keywords people are searching for concerning your topic. A good way of doing this is by coming up with a few ideas and then searching these terms in Google. You can look at the top results and look for common words used. Once you have your keyword or keywords, make sure they are included at the beginning of your article, title, and headers.

Spend some time on search volume - Google Trends is a great tool that can give you a good idea of things like the monthly searches a topic gets. This is a great tool to utilize as it will allow you to see what keywords people search to target, thus allowing you to build your ranking there.

Build authority - If you focus on keywords that seem quite out of reach, focusing on building domain authority is a good idea. A great way to try to build authority is to gain backlinks from other sites. Think of this as SEO juice. You can try reaching out to sites to get these, but a more organic way is to produce great content that people will want to read, and more importantly, share.
